Shopify app development: building a product for the App Store

If you want to publish your own product in the Shopify ecosystem, we run the process with you from architecture through to App Store review.

What does this service cover?

This service differs from a private app built for a single store: here you have a product that many stores will install, that is sold on a subscription, and that has to pass Shopify's review process.

What makes the difference is product thinking rather than engineering: if the install flow, authorisation, billing and support processes are not right from the start, the app does not pass review — or it passes and then buckles under the maintenance load.

What decides whether you pass review

The places apps most often get stuck in Shopify's review are about user experience more than engineering:

The first experience after install: what the app does must be clear on the first screen
Requesting only the permissions you need; broad permission requests are not accepted without justification
Billing running through Shopify's own API
Stating clearly what happens to data when the app is uninstalled
Performance: code added to the storefront must not slow the page down

Scale and maintenance

The work does not stop once the app is published; that is where the real cost begins.

API version calendar: Shopify releases regularly, and the app has to keep up
Rate limits and queue management; load multiplies during campaign periods
Webhook reliability: a compensation mechanism for missed events
Preventing silent failure: monitoring that tells you when the app has stopped working

How we work

01
Product definition
The problem the app solves, the target store profile and the pricing model are settled.
02
Architecture
The data model, authorisation, webhook flows and hosting plan are drawn up.
03
Development
Install flow, admin interface and business logic are built and tested end to end on a test store.
04
Listing and review
The App Store listing is prepared and review feedback is addressed.
05
After launch
Monitoring, error alerting and API version maintenance continue; the roadmap is updated against usage data.

Frequently asked

No. In that case a private app is a better fit: there is no App Store review, no billing and no multi-tenant architecture, so the cost drops markedly.
