International selling: setting up Shopify Markets

We build multi-currency, market-based pricing, language and tax setup on Shopify Markets.

What does this service cover?

Selling abroad is not just adding a language to your existing store. How price is set, how tax is displayed, how long shipping takes and where returns go all differ per market.

We plan the setup to expand once it is proven to work in one market, rather than opening every market at once.

The critical decisions in the setup

URL structure: subfolder or separate domain — the search implications differ
Pricing: automatic on exchange rate, or fixed prices per market
Whether tax is shown as included in the price; expectations vary by market
Whether duty and tax liability sits with the customer or the seller
The return address, and who covers the cost of returns

Payment and notifications

Payment and communication work differently abroad than they do domestically:

International card acceptance and the local payment methods the market expects
With no expectation of instalments, the payment flow gets simpler
Notification language is chosen by the buyer's market
Export invoicing and currency regulations are set up with your accountant

How we work

01
Market selection
Which markets you open with which product range, and the expected volume, are settled.
02
Structural decisions
URL structure, currency, pricing and tax display are decided.
03
Setup
Markets is configured, language and content prepared, shipping and payment rules defined.
04
Testing
A real order flow is run from the target market: price, tax, shipping and notifications are verified.
05
Expansion
Once the first market has settled, the next markets are opened on the same template.

Frequently asked

In most cases, no. Shopify Markets lets you run multiple markets from one store; a separate store only makes sense when the operation, catalogue or legal entity genuinely separates.
