Shopify theme development: bespoke, fast and manageable

If you have hit the limits of an off-the-shelf theme, or you want an interface that speaks your brand's language from the start, we run the design and the Liquid development together.

What does this service cover?

A custom theme is not something every store needs. But where the interface is the brand itself, where the sales flow does not fit an off-the-shelf theme's section logic, or where the app stack has bloated the theme, a custom theme works out cheaper over time.

The theme we deliver is one that does not depend on a developer: launching a campaign page, reordering sections and updating content need no code.

How we work

We run design and development as one flow rather than two separate projects. Whether the design can actually be built is tested from day one:

The design system comes first: type scale, colour, spacing and component states
Page templates are broken into sections, each independently editable
Product and collection pages are built first; those two templates carry the revenue
A speed budget is set up front and every section is written against it
Accessibility checks happen during development, not afterwards

Theme updates and maintenance

This is the most-asked question about custom themes. On an off-the-shelf theme updates come from the vendor; on a custom theme sustainability comes down to writing discipline.

The theme code is documented; what each section does is written down
A maintenance plan is defined against Shopify's theme version changes
When an app injects code into the theme, it is done under control
The source repository is opened in your name; another team can take it over

How we work

01
Discovery
The existing store's data, catalogue structure and sales flow are reviewed; the problems the theme must solve are written down.
02
Design system
Typography, colour, spacing and components are built; home, collection and product templates are designed.
03
Development
The Liquid theme is written, sections are made editable, and the speed budget is measured at every step.
04
Content and testing
It is filled with real content and tested across devices, browsers and accessibility checks.
05
Launch and handover
The theme goes live, documentation is delivered and your team is trained on it.

Frequently asked

For a first store, an off-the-shelf theme is nearly always right. A custom theme makes sense once you have hit that theme's limits, when the interface genuinely differentiates you, or when the cost and speed penalty of theme apps exceeds custom development.
